What a rewarding and fulfilling experience working alongside other passionate volunteers and giving back to the community! Following strict safety protocols at the exceptionally well organized & clean Chai Wan kitchen operation, 1200 hot meals were prepared for distribution after working together on the assembly line from sorting, meal prep to packing. Other volunteer work includes serving, distribution and cooking as well.

Food Angel is a food rescue organization launched in 2011 by Bo Charity Foundation with the mission of “WASTE NOT, HUNGER NOT”

The program rescues edible surplus food from different sectors of the food industry that would otherwise be disposed of as waste. The rescued food items will then be prepared as nutritious hot meals and redistributed to underprivileged communities providing 8,000 free meals daily!

FACTS:

-          One in seven people in Hong Kong lives in poverty (i.e. earning less than $4,000 a month) 20% of children live among the poor and 1/3 of seniors struggling to meet nutritional needs

-          Over 3,600 TONS of surplus food is discarded in Hong Kong every day

-          Hong Kong’s landfills will be full by 2020

-          Food waste produces a massive amount of methane, a greenhouse gas which is 25 times more damaging to the earth than carbon dioxide.
